A heavy cloud of uncertainty has descended upon Igbore township in Abeokuta, Ogun State following a formal petition by prominent indigenes to the State Government.

The community leaders are calling for an immediate halt to the election of the Olori Parakoyi Egba, which was originally scheduled to take place on Monday, May 11, 2026.

The demand was contained in a strongly worded letter jointly signed by a group of high-profile personalities, including Professor Afolabi Soyode and Chief Olajoju Fadairo.

Other signatories to the petition include Chief Dipo Akingbade and Chief Olaseni Ogunyemi, acting on behalf of patriotic Igbore indigenes.

The petition was officially addressed to the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Honourable Ganiyu Oladunjoye Hamzat.

To ensure the gravity of the situation is understood, copies were also sent to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

The Executive Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government and various security agencies have also been put on notice regarding the brewing crisis.

The community leaders maintain that the election cannot proceed until several “thorny issues” are fully addressed by the relevant authorities.

At the heart of the dispute is a Public Notice previously issued by the Abeokuta South Local Government. This notice provided a clear option for a township meeting to handle the nomination of candidates for the prestigious title.

Records show that the Igbore community strictly complied with this directive during a meeting held at the Igbore Town Hall on April 24, 2026.

This gathering was notably held at the specific instance of Local Government officials themselves.

However, the petitioners allege that the outcome of that democratic exercise has been “unethically ignored” by the authorities.

They claim the shift away from the agreed-upon process has created a vacuum of trust within the township.

Further complicating the matter are allegations of manipulation surrounding the introduction of mandatory certificates issued by the Ake Palace.

The leaders claim these certificates are being used as a tool for voter suppression.

According to the petition, some eligible electors have already paid the required fees for these certificates.

Despite making payment, many have reportedly not received their documents, effectively barring them from participating.

The community leaders believe this tactic is a deliberate attempt to exclude specific voters from exercising their rights.

They argue this is being done to unfairly tilt the scales in favor of a particular candidate.

The mood in Igbore is currently described as being “on edge,” with many fearing a total breakdown of law and order. Residents are reportedly worried that the democratic process is being hijacked by fraudulent interests.

The petitioners warned that the current situation portends a repeat of the 2021 violent crisis that rocked the community. That historical conflict resulted in severe instability and physical damage within the township.

Most notably, the 2021 violence led to the forced closure of the Ile Ogboni Igbore for several months. The leaders are desperate to avoid a return to such dark days for the community.

They described the fraudulent dimensions of the current planned election as a catalyst for potential bloodshed. The threat of looming crisis has become a central point of concern for traditional and academic leaders alike.

The group is now seeking the urgent intervention of the Ogun State Government to restore sanity to the process. They believe only high-level mediation can prevent the situation from escalating further.

The primary request remains the immediate postponement of the election scheduled for Monday. This time, they argue, is necessary to resolve the technical and ethical disputes currently dividing the town.

Supporters of the petition argue that a rushed election will only lead to an illegitimate leadership. They insist that the integrity of the Olori Parakoi Egba title must be preserved through a transparent process.
Local observers are watching the state government’s response closely as the Monday deadline approaches.

Any delay in government action could further heighten tensions among the rival factions.

As of the time of this report, the Ogun State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the request for a postponement. The community remains in a state of watchful waiting.
